Fish n Chip shops saw a mini revolution in the early 60’s. Originally many were just a basic shop selling minimal options. Typically, the shop front window would be painted a dark green, inside. The walls were also a dark green with a small serving hatch where through a fog of steam you made your order.
A very basic choice …normally fish … chips … peas … and drinks, a bottle of Tizer. Then the new breed of Chippies opened mainly run by enterprising Greeks. The front window now was clear glass where you can openly view the entire shop with the small hatch arrangement gone and replaced by a glass counter display of the freshly cooked produce. And what a selection now… ‘Fish’ is now a selection of cod, hake, plaice, haddock .. pies ..chicken or steak and onion, savaloy’s, and some had scallops .. (sliced potatoe in batter).
My illustration shows such the chippy revolution experience of mine with such a basic chippy near Garston and a newly opened chippy in Aigburth.
